Yallingup, on foot
Most of what makes Yallingup worth visiting is reachable on foot. The ghost trail through the gardens leads to the beach in ten minutes - a sheltered lagoon, a world-class surf break, a clifftop playground, and a kiosk bar at the water's edge. Ngilgi Cave is a short bush walk away.
Dunsborough, ten minutes away
A small, relaxed town on Geographe Bay - good coffee, boutique shops, restaurants, and all the practicalities. The kind of holiday town that takes itself just seriously enough. Excellent bakeries. Monthly Weekend markets worth timing your stay around.
The Margaret River Region, 45 minutes south
The wines need no introduction. Caves Road starts at your doorstop and winds south through wineries, breweries, galleries and food producers - few guests make it from one end to the other without three stops. Margaret River township is 45 minutes south, and worth a full day.
Yallingup is not that kind of town. There is no main strip, no chain anything. What there is - within a few minutes of Caves House - is a handful of places that have quietly become essential to anyone who knows the South West well. Consider this your local's shortlist.
Most locals still call it Andy's - a name that outlasted the owner it belonged to by decades. The current owners bought it from Andy, who had run it for 35 years, with one clear intention: keep it exactly as it was. They have. It's a general store, café and post office folded into one - the kind of place where you walk in for milk and leave forty minutes later having talked to three strangers about the swell.
The sesame burger has been on the menu long enough that regulars order it without looking up. Bare feet are fine. Wetsuits are fine. The TV usually has surf footage on, and if there's a set running at Yallingup Beach, someone at the counter will know about it. Open from 6am - early enough for the serious surfers, late enough for everyone else.
A German family with a two-decade tradition of organic wood-fired baking expanded in 2014 into something more: croissants, scrolls, cakes, sandwiches, quiche - all made from scratch, every morning. Their woodfired sourdough has been a South West staple long enough to have earned the word iconic without irony.
The namesake gugelhupf is worth the detour alone. A crown-shaped cake with roots in Central Europe, baked here in traditional ceramic moulds using biodynamic flour - the Strasbourg with walnuts and speck is the one to have with a glass of Margaret River red; the classic Vienna with sultana and vanilla is breakfast. It is currently the only bakery in Western Australia making it.
Go early. Things sell out.
The cellar door culture of the Margaret River region is world-class and well documented. What's less discussed is how good the local bottle shops have become - places run by people who actually know the producers, have visited the vineyards, and can tell you why a particular vintage of Cullen or Vasse Felix is worth paying for.
The Caves House Bottleshop is that kind of shop. A well-edited range of Margaret River wine, craft beer from the South West's growing brewing scene, and the kind of staff knowledge that comes from being embedded in wine country rather than just selling into it. Worth a visit before settling in for the evening - or stocking the apartment fridge for the week.

By road: an easy three-hour drive south of Perth, largely via the South Western Highway and Caves Road. Take your time - there's no rush.
By air: Busselton Margaret River Airport (BQB) is approximately 40 minutes away. Perth Airport (PER) is three hours by road.
